Title: The Hunger Games (AU) (Chapter 17 released)
Post by: Abu on August 06, 2018, 06:44:23 PM
A few centuries ago, humanity killed itself off after a large war that used nuclear weaponry resulted in famine and drought. Almost every place on Earth was affected, and most records of civilisation were destroyed. Climate change is what began this conflict; humanity could never control itself. The few remaining nations are all unaware of each other's existence, and have regressed into a society with a lot of advanced technology in transport and infrastructure, but with pre-Industrial era agriculture, healthcare, weaponry, and communications (with the exception of television).

Oros was founded 133 years ago by a group of a few thousand Survivalists, who enslaved the people who had already found a home; the Charngashnar mountain hunters, the Gwarashnar badland gatherers, the Suxnei plain farmers, and the Udnei marshland dwellers.

When the four groups rebelled 78 years ago, a bloody civil war erupted, but the Survivalists won. To force the natives to remember this event, the Hunger Games began. 6 people from each group of natives would be forced to battle it out until only 2 were remaining.

Charngashnar (The Mountains)
Alondra, Isabelle, Jayma, Kenny, Usopp, and Volt.

Gwarashnar (The Badlands)
Ay-Chao, Cosmo, Faiz, Kowhai, Sayla, and Zetsu.

Suxnei (The Plains)
Abu, Faith, Hobbes, Kanga, Leia, and Robin.

Údnei (The Marshlands)
Batari, Ianiant, Joe, Roshani, Sayori, and Sophia.

The 74th Hunger Games.

I have taken the liberty to create an entirely new world, with some backstory, in the first post. The Hunger Games themselves have the same rules (but with two winners being the default for more interesting dynamics). Random.org will be the sole decider of who dies and kills, with the exception of a death that makes zero sense in a story.

Usually, the downfall of my fanfictions is that I spend too much time on the backstory. So apart from the first post I will try to make sure that the rest of the fan fiction will just be plot!

Just throw in some random backstory when it is appropriate. Let the plot reveal that stuff slowly.

Chapter 1
The 74th Hunger Games

Overseer Neff towers over his Survivalist comrades on his altar this chilly spring day, but that doesn't help him with his stage fright. Breathing in...breathing out. Nobody will really care if he slips up; these people adore the Hunger Games, and they respect Matthew Neff just as much. Yet, announcing the start of Hunger Games season was always difficult for him.

Not that there was any time left to ponder about that.

It was time.

"Survivalist brothers and sisters!", Overseer Neff begins.

"I am pleased to announce that this year, the Hunger Games will be taking place in the summer. In 90 days, 24 contestants will be battling it out to the death. Only two will remain victorious!". Pausing for dramatic effect, his spirits are uplifted by the yelling and cheering of the crowd.

"We have a dangerous, but beautiful, arena being prepared for our contestants. They will be selected in 14 days; you will get to know them very soon! Thank you, Survivalists, for your continued loyalty to the government. This is your reward!".

They ate it up like candy, these Survivalists. Matthew didn't understand what was so exciting. These were foolish barbarians who got in the way of his ancestors; they deserved the painful reminder. No, they deserved far worse. Little did those barbarians know that the contestants this year were going to be rigged...

Forumers will be aged up, but for the most part, not too much. If you dislike an aspect about your character, don't hesitate to tell me. I tried to make the forumers similar to who they are.

Chapter 2
Perspectives

The gray-haired Jayma sneers at the other contestants from Charngashnar. This is disappointing. These teenagers and young adults look like their most exhausting experience has been at a gym. Typical Charngashnar youth; never leaving their heated cities, never braving the cold, freezing mountains to hunt for bears and elk.

She isn't supposed to be here, anyways; Jayma won the 33rd Hunger Games at only 14 years old. Apparently, there are new rules this year; anyone from the ages of 13 to 60 can be selected, with no exceptions.

She already knows that she isn't going to be a victor this time around, but when her name was called, she was looking forward to educating some youngsters on survival tips.

Especially hunting tips. She's the best huntress in the nation; no animal is a match for her. Man and beast have fallen at her feet; all except one. The most formidable animal in Oros is too bulky and too strong for her, but Jayma has gotten over that. She's in her twilight years.

Jayma reminisces about her being at her peak.

She coughs as yet another weakling gets called up. That Alondra girl is nervously cracking jokes with a clearly annoyed Isabelle, and Usopp is laughing along. Worthless! Kenny shows some potential, but that smug look on his face seems like a façade. Who's next? A teenaged barista?

The final contestant comes up silently.

His name is Volt, and there is something about him that captivates the crowd. Serious, but not cocky...

Jayma already knows who she will be training.

I walk up to the altar, heart beating after my selection.

"Good to see you here, Abu!", Hobbes tells me.

I'm glad that I know Hobbes and Robin from the Suxnei contestants, but it's shocking that everyone except Hobbes is a teenager. The Overseer announced yesterday that people up to the age of 65 could be selected, and it's quite strange that only one person older than 18 is selected in Suxnei. We're the largest of the four native groups, and because we're farmers, we're the healthiest by far, especially compared to the badland gatherers, the Gwarashnar.

I'm hoping to ally with Hobbes. He was my geography teacher two years ago, and he knows the outdoors quite well. But I'll have to see who's selected from the other regions first.

I don't really expect to win this, but if I win, then I will be able to see the the other parts of Oros. The Survivalists hate us natives unless we're Hunger Games victors. They live in their fancy cities, while only the Charngashnar and us Suxnei folk have any transport, since we're important to them for resources...

I see that our final contestant is someone named Kanga. The other contestants seem nice, but only Leia has much muscle on her, and I doubt that anyone but Hobbes knows anything about survival. I hope that someone from Suxnei wins again.

Well, let's see how this will work...I don't know yet. At least we have more than two months of preparation in the Survivalist region. I can't wait to see the cities!

I don't think that Robin took this too well. I'm going to go and help her calm down...

Chapter 3
Travels

I gape at the immaculate train station in Payska. Why does the capital of Suxnei have so many huge, advanced buildings? That's unfair; they're farmers, while us Gwarashnar live in the dry and cold badlands and are impoverished despite doing triple the work. We even have to travel to Payska in a carriage because there aren't any trains in the badlands.

A Survivalist guard pushes me towards the group. "Contestant Zetsu; keep moving".

At least it looks like someone from Gwarashnar might win this year. It's been a while. A decade ago, both winners of the Hunger Games were from Suxnei for four years in a row. Come on! This year, we have Sayla, the expert gatherer, and Kowhai, the daughter of our chief. She's very tech-savvy, since she's been to the Survivalist cities before.

I don't think that I will win, but I have more than two months to work out and learn some survival tips before the Hunger Games begin. If I won't be lazy, then I have a chance. I need to make some smart alliances. I don't necessarily have to make any friends; any emotional attachment to the contestants here could lead to my downfall.

I'm definitely going to learn from Sayla; from what I've heard, she lived in the wild badlands for a few years as a punishment for something, so she knows every type of edible or poisonous plant around and can build hidden shelter. She's a bit insane. Well, no, she is definitely insane. She wears a necklace of the ears of the deceased to silence screams that she claims she can hear. But she's hardy and ruthless, so it doesn't matter.

Sayla the gatherer; her ability to survive in the wilderness will help all of her allies.

Faiz and Ay-Chao are book smart, but I don't know anything else about them. If Faiz is really a poet then he doesn't stand a chance. Cosmo is great at sports, he's an athlete. He can be a good and trustworthy ally.

But I shouldn't limit myself to just Gwarashnar allies. That's what usually leads to our group's downfall. Maybe I can trick some of the Suxnei contestants.

Yes, that's a very good idea.

Joe keeps tossing and turning in his bed. This train cabin is uncomfortable, and everything on his mind isn't helping his calm down enough to sleep. He really, really, really doubts that he's getting past the first day.

Why is he in this anyways? These new rules were stupid. Joe won the 58th Hunger Games, and got an amputated leg and disfigured back for it. Unlike most Údnei victors, Joe opted to live in the Survivalist cities for much of his post-victor life, where he got a prosthetic leg, but nothing could be done for his back. He can already see it; limping away from the Cornucopia, only to have his lungs punctured by some rogue shooter.

At least he wasn't alone in this; rumour has it that another Hunger Games victor was selected as well. A guard said that it was Jayma from Charngashnar, who was the sole victor of the 33rd Hunger Games, but another one said that it was a winner of the 67th Hunger Games. Joe doesn't remember who won that year.

He's probably going to ally with any previous victors. The Údnei contestants are crazy this year. Joe never liked the Údnei marshlands. It was backwards in every way possible.

But did the holy High Priestess really have to be selected this year? The Sun Daughter, Batari, was already leading Sayori and Roshani in prayers that they win. Unlike most of the Údnei and Suxnei, Joe didn't believe in their deities of the sun and the moon. Unfortunately, because Batari was chosen, this Hunger Games is probably going to be filled with religious talk in her grand attempts to convert everyone.

Unlike most Údnei, Joe also could care less about who won. Meanwhile, Ianiant wouldn't stop talking about how exciting it was that Batari, Joe, and Roshani were chosen for the Údnei because of their prowess in combat. Roshani is the best athlete in the nation, including in wrestling, while Batari has a strong resistance to burns and is an expert with the bow. Joe wonders how Ianiant didn't notice his limp.

He is intrigued by that Sophia girl; something about her seems very off. Joe definitely wants to get to know her better.

Joe finds it very suspicious that he and Batari are in this year's Hunger Games. Both of them have been very outspoken about their distaste for Overseer Neff's new rules; it got Joe kicked out of the Survivalist cities, but he's returning one last time, it seems.

Actually, Joe feels that he has an idea why they were selected...and it isn't a great one.

Chapter 4
Preparations

"You have 3 minutes to find all of the edible food in this simulated arena. Go!".

Sophia had learned enough from the station leaders to figure out what types of mushrooms were safe to eat. Being from the hot and humid Údnei marshlands, she already knew what berries were edible and which were poisonous. But grasses and nuts were tougher.

She accidentally presents acorns as edible food, but otherwise, Sophia got everything else correct. And she only missed two foods!

She doesn't show it, but Sophia's proud at the fact that she is doing better than everyone at this station. Zetsu is decent, but Kowhai and Isabelle seem clueless. The others are scattered around the Survivalist valley, training in combat, hunting, or or other stuff. There was plenty of time to wait and relax.

The contestants from Suxnei seemed very nice, unlike how most people portrayed them. A contestant called Robin had caught Sophia's eye; she seemed kind, and not at all intent on killing, but intelligent. But she was always with two other boys and an older man. Probably the three male Suxnei contestants; those people stuck together like glue every Game. But they aren't all bad...

"Honestly", Sophia thought to herself, "the four groups of natives are stereotyped to the Moon and back". The Charngashnar were raw meat eaters; Gwarashnar gatherers never bathed; the Suxnei were rich and fat; and the Údnei were religious fundamentalists.

Going off on her own to the Údnei longhouse, Sophia basks in the warm sunshine as blue jays yell in the background. It's just like the victors told her; the valley that you trained in was really nice. Lots of birdsong, rivers, flowers, and nature. Definitely a good location for a prison.

The serenity in this valley is relaxing.

The contestants had exactly 60 days left until the Hunger Games started. That gave Sophia plenty of time to get to know her fellow contestants. She wasn't looking forward to the interviews or the runway show. What was the point of being pretty when you were being sentenced to an almost certain death?

Ever since the reforms that started from the 50th Hunger Games, there were always 60 to 65 days of preparation instead of 7. It helped most of the contestants get used to the fact that they were probably going to die. After you think about it every day for such a long time, it's just a grim reality. Sophia was already accepting it; but there was no chance that she'd give up.

No, she will win this, she tells herself. Approaching the longhouse, already Sophia can hear an argument. Not unusual; High Priestess Batari and Joe won't stop arguing about religion. Sophia wasn't the most religious person, so she never took sides.

"Blasphemer! If it is sunny with no clouds in the sky for three days straight, then it means that the Sun is happy with us. Join our prayers now or risk death!".

Sophia gapes at High Priestess Batari yelling at Joe.

"In the Hunger Games, I mean. I won't murder anyone in here, obviously", she says, smiling sheepishly.

High Priestess Batari is an ambitious pyromaniac.

Sophia takes some food and walks back out to eat lunch alone. Her fellow contestants were polar opposites and unbearable. What happens when you combine the High Priestess, an atheist, a tribalistic teenager, a selfish athlete, an innocent animal lover, and Sophia? Not good.

There won't be anything for the next month, just more training and contestant get-togethers. Then all of the publicity starts, and Sophia will have to be prodded like a horse around the Survivalist cities.

This seems fun!

Chapter 5
Training

"Robin", Hobbes calls after me. "Remember to focus on the hunting skills. You're already great at the other ones that you showed promise in."

I reply positively and trek through the beautiful training valley to the hunting station. I don't want to kill animals, but I'm going to have to learn how to kill goats or geese to get some food once the Games begin.

I can't believe it's already been four weeks since we began training! The training is almost over, and the publicity will start soon. I already formed a planned alliance with Abu, Hobbes, and Zetsu. Sometimes Sophia joins us for lunch. I hope that she joins us in the Games!

The other contestants have formed their own groups, but none are as large as ours. Zetsu says that we will have to be careful; large alliances are picked off first. That makes sense.

I find it tough to believe that they're already starting soon. It was very frightening at first, but I've kind of gotten over it now. I'll try as hard as I can to win these Hunger Games, and then I can travel all of Oros. But the Games come first.

We've been training non-stop, but it's still tough getting used to so much work. But it's definitely a good thing that I've been working so hard, because I feel much healthier and doing exercise is much easier. There was also a meditation station during the third week to help us contestants stay calm during the Games, so my mental health improved.

I arrive at the hunting practice station; the master huntress, Jayma, is there with Volt. A lot of contestants have tried to get Jayma's advice, but she's only stuck with Volt the entire time so far. They seem to be trying to identify the camouflage patterns of prey...

It can be difficult to spot some animals because of their patterns.

"That's a deer, yes. Good!", Jayma's voice booms. "A master hunter's eyes must see that which others cannot see; do you have the master hunter in you, Volt?".

"I didn't think that I would be so good at sharpshooting, but you've taught me otherwise", Volt replied.

They didn't see me at all. "A master hunter also needs to watch their backs, since carnivores could attack at any second!", I tell them eagerly.

"...Robin, yes?", Jayma asks. I reply affirmatively.

"My hunter eyes have caught yours. You are afraid of the night, even afraid of killing...just like the others. But I see potential in you. Come with us, Robin. You will learn with us. A privilege!".

By the end of the day, Robin has made a new alliance, and learned how to painlessly use spears to kill animals for food.

But one watching loner is jealous...and he swears that both of Robin's alliances will be destroyed.

Roshani, a championed athlete, wasn't used to being an outcast, but his sickness in the first week prevented him from forming any alliances, and now everyone thinks he is weak. All except with High Priestess Batari; she has other alliances, so perhaps he will join those ones...but if they don't accept him, then, well...Roshani has been called caring before, but he loves revenge.

They'll see!

Chapter 7: Training ends, testing starts and ends.
Chapter 8: Fashion show in the Survivalist Capitol.
Chapter 9: Interlude with Overseer Neff.
Chapter 10: Interviews.
Chapter 11: Final preparations.
Chapter 12: The Bloodbath of the Games.

It's a long one!

If you got low scores in the judging, then I'm sorry. Some people had to get them and I mostly used people who haven't been focused on in the story yet for that. Your chances of winning don't decrease; and for the person who got a 1, you're using it to your advantage!

Chapter 6
The Judging

Usopp and Ianiant walk towards their final training station. They formed an unlikely alliance two weeks ago, but quickly found out that their love of jokes and their similar strengths made them a perfect duo.

They just had to learn how to hunt animals before tomorrow; they'd be judged then, and their scores would be broadcasted publically. Higher scores meant that more people would send you supply drops during the Hunger Games, and more contestants would fear you.

It's going to be tough leaving this beautiful training valley.

"The Údnei are going to win this! We have our High Priestess, Roshani, and Joe. They're all amazing!", Ianiant excitedly tells Usopp.

"Batari seems-"

"Her title is High Priestess Batari", Ianiant reminds Usopp.

"Yeah, yeah. The High Priestess is great with a bow. But Joe's got a limp. And Roshani was sick, remember? Guy seems angry at everyone now", Usopp points out.

"Good point, everyone who doesn't know him well thinks he's a weakling now. Mark my words, though, they'll regret underestimating him after the judging. I saw him at the Orolympics before, and he won gold medals for wrestling everytime", Ianiant tells Usopp.

Usopp is impressed. "Maybe we should get into an alliance with him".

Ianiant agrees. "By the way, Usopp...why do you think we call them the Orolympics?".

The next day, Jayma smirks at Volt as she walks out of the judging den.

"You must have done well!", Volt exclaims.

"Shock was plastered on their faces. I had perfect aim on all of the animal decoys. I shot an arrow at their food when I was done", Jayma tells him.

Volt loves this. "Such a rebel. Wish me luck!".

Jayma recognised one of the judges; he was her sole judge when she was in the 33rd Hunger Games. He called her weak at the time. Now he looks frail, and Jayma can still kill a bear with one spear through the heart. Serves him right!

Jayma wonders how Robin will do. She snuck up on her and Volt without them noticing...that's something special.

Jayma recommended her to try to show off her camouflaging skills. She's certain that if Robin did that, she would do well.

Isabelle kicks the incoming decoy in the stomach, before cracking its 'ribs'. She throws it into the other two decoys that are after her, and snaps the neck of one while it's stunned.

The final decoy trips her, but Isabelle grabs its feet before it can cause her to lose the simulation.

Before Isabelle can go on, her time is up.

She almost got past the third round in her allotted time; that's great! The judges seem impressed. Good thing her martial arts and physical combat training paid off. Others may be using weaponry, but it's tough to find it at the start of the Games; best to run away, pick people off, and then steal their equipment.

Isabelle is having a difficult time outside of her training, though. She's barely talked to anyone except Faiz and Cosmo from Gwarashnar, and that's making her feel lonely. If you spend a lot of time with allies, then you can't train as much. It's tough.

Soon Isabelle is going to have to kill some of her fellow contestants.

The Hunger Games are cruel.

I really didn't mean to freak out Zetsu's Suxnei friends, the girl looked so frightened by my ear necklace. They just don't hear the screams, but I don't blame them. It's tough to hear them when you're in a cave like this.

"Contestant Sayla; you're up".

I didn't earn the title of master gatherer of the Gwarashnar for nothing! Time to show off all that I know. It may not earn me as much of a score as if I did flawless combat, but I can't.

"I will be doing the gathering simulation!", I yell.

Oops! The judges are staring at my necklace, for some reason. I guess I had to wait before speaking.

The simulation starts, and I quickly find all of the edible foods. Wild almonds are best left alone; acorns are poisonous; honeysuckle is delicious; mulberries are great. All those years in the wild paid off, even if it was a punishment. I regret-

No! I have to forget that.

Well, the judges are clearly shocked. Score one for Sayla! I really have to calm down now before I break into a dance. Time to meditate for a bit once I leave...I wonder how I did!

Unfortunately for Sayla, the moment she came back to the main cave complex she broke into a dance!

"...the contestants are scored out of 10", exclaims Mystic Phiri, the official Voice of the Games from the radio. "Their chosen simulation is also listed. Starting from the top, here are the results of the 74th Hunger Games contestants' judging! But first, an advertisement for Gwaraberries!"

"...really? Why would they interrupt us with an advertisement!", Leia groans. "We're lucky that we even have a connection, since this stone dome for a houses isn't helping. The Údnei are staying in a longhouse. Why is that?"

"Have you ever been to Tushwarha?", Abu points out. "The oldest building that we Suxnei ever built was a stone dome, and the native groups' living quarters are all traditional buildings. A longhouse for the Údnei, a stone dome for us...".

The stone dome house of the Suxnei.

"...animal skin huts for the Gwarashnar, and a wooden fort for the Charngashnar. Good memory, Abu!", Hobbes booms.

"That's interesting!", Faith says. Leia agrees.

"Well, we better be quiet", Robin tells the group. "Someone wake Kanga before the ads finish!".

The Suxnei contestants crowd around the radio, including Kanga. 10 is flawless; 5 is alright; 1 is mortifying.

Mystic Phiri's voice returns.

"Jayma - Hunting, 10.
Batari - Fire, 8.
Roshani - Combat, 8.
Volt - Hunting, 8.
Cosmo - Combat, 7.
Hobbes - Survival, 7.
Isabelle - Combat, 7.
Sayla - Gathering, 7.
Abu - Gathering, 6.
Kenny - Fire, 6.
Leia - Survival, 6.
Zetsu - Combat, 6.
Kanga - Gathering, 5.
Robin - Camouflage, 5.
Joe - Camouflage, 5.
Ay-Chao - Gathering, 4.
Faith - Combat, 4.
Ianiant - Survival, 4.
Usopp - Hunting, 4.
Alondra - Shelter, 3.
Faiz - Gathering, 3.
Kowhai - Electricity, 3.
Sayori - Shelter, 3.
Sophia - Meditation, 1.

Remember that YOU, people of Oros, get to choose the professions that we will refer to all of our contestants as! We'll find them out after the fashion show!", she finishes off, as Robin turns off the radio.

Everyone yells out their opinions in the Suxnei rock dome.

"How did Sophia get a 1? She did amazing!".
"I knew I should've done something other than combat!".
"Let's congratulate Hobbes and Leia for their high scores!".
"Woah, Jayma got a 10! How?".

Hobbes explains to the group exactly how the judging works. "Sophia got a 1 because, for some reason, she chose meditation as her simulation skill in the judging. If you show off shelter or gathering, your scores will be much lower than if you chose hunting or combat, assuming your skill level is the same in all of them. Normally, you could only get a 10 if you do all five rounds of the combat simulation flawlessly, but obviously Jayma went above and beyond. She is a master huntress!".

"That makes sense, but how do you know this, Hobbes? I've read a lot about the Hunger Games and I've never come across this", Abu points out.

"Oh, just something I saw once...well, congratulations Leia! You got a great score", Hobbes says.

"You did too, Hobbes!", Faith reminds him.

"It's been nice to be together. Let's make some traditional food! Suxnei can win this again!", Kanga yells.

The night was festive for all of the groups! But, though it was unspoken, everyone wondered why did Sophia choose to present meditation, knowing it would get her a terrible score...and a lot of the people who did slightly above average swore to bring Jayma and Volt down.

Chapter 7
Lights, Camera, Fashion!

I walk with the rest of the contestants in the basement of some building. We're in the Survivalist Capitol, but we haven't been above-ground yet...

The train to the Capitol was filled with luxurious foods and pompous beds to sleep in overnight, but I miss the training valley. It's stupid to let us train first, and then give us a break for twenty days. We could forget the skills we've learned! At least we still get over a week to practice again, right before the Hunger Games begin...

"You seem to be zoned out, Zetsu. Something up?", Robin asks me.

"Yes, I don't get the point of this fashion show when we could be training", I reply. "One of the guards said that the person in charge of us Gwarashnar was insane, so that's worrying".

"You did good during the training, unlike me! So good luck!", Sophia says, before running off to the Údnei fashion room.

Robin and I separate, and I join my group. Cosmo eavesdropped on the guards as well. Apparently, the person in charge of us for the fashion show is indeed nuts.

Let's see what happens!

"Welcome, Gwarashnar brothers and sisters!", yells an old man as we enter the room.

"Baba Ji is the name, and I will ensure that we are represented for the gatherers that we are! The Overseer has entrusted me to dress you up...I have a vision! You will appear strong, and hardened from growing up in the bleak badlands". His booming voice definitely has a strange edge to it. But he seems fine-

Suddenly, Baba Ji produces a human skull filled with blood. What in the world?!

"Drink the love potion, Gwarashnar, it's good for your soul! I can get a better read on your fashion choices. You may even fall in love...it's made from the blood of mice, and even their hearts...", Baba Ji whispers to us.

I try not to vomit.

(https://cdn.vox-cdn.com/thumbor/wBorhaz5y5OguRb8fWFC3pMJRxc=/148x0:1768x1080/1200x800/filters:focal(148x0:1768x1080)/cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_image/image/48911651/Shaman_GOLD_1080p_1449171021.0.0.jpg)
No thanks, Baba Ji! I'll get my daddy another way, sans eyeballs and blood...

Ay-Chao slaps Baba Ji. "Uncle! I know that the Games were hard on you, but you said that the therapy helped! Man up! Sorry everyone, Baba Ji hasn't been the same since the Games. He won the 41st ones, and his health has only gotten worse recently", she tells the group.

"No! You misunderstand, Ay-Chao! The love potions allow me to gain insight into your minds! But they're not necessary, I suppose...well, take a look at the outfits. We're going for a primal hunter-gatherer look!".

The outfits look alright. I guess Sayla found her twin in Baba Ji. Poor Ay-Chao! There is something interesting about Baba Ji, though...he seems to have a lot of stories from his Games. It's almost time for the fashion show, in any case.

The Survivalists cheer as the fashion show begins to start. They're all so excited! The artists are ready to sketch the outfits for anyone not present, so that all of Oros can see the contestants via the newspaper. Mystic Phiri has donned a beautiful indigo silk dress, and is ready to present with her new co-host, Kirby. The Survivalists swoon over both of them as they are the first to strut down the walkway.

"Mystic Phiri has never been so pretty! That foundation is doing wonders!".
"It's Kirby! IT'S KIRBY!".

A lot of the Survivalists look flat-out alien to our contestants!

Both of them chuckle, as Mystic Phiri begins to announce the groups of contestants starting to walk down the huge, spacious, and luxurious walkway. "North to south, we're going Charngashnar, Gwarashnar, Suxnei, and Údnei! We have a cozy modern winter style, a rugged primal style, a style that's a throwback to the foundation of Oros, and religious wear, respectively!".

"Meet your contestants, Survivalists! We know how much you love them! Swoon over 'em!", Kirby yells, as the crowd goes crazy.

The vast Capitol of the Survivalists is unlike anything the contestants, with the exception of Kowhai, have ever seen before!

The Charngashnar stylishly walk down in a rehearsed, synchronised walking pattern. The women and girls throw their sunglasses to the boys, who put them on.

"The designer of this pattern, Gucci Boi Brandon, wants to show all of Oros that Charngashnar is past its days of poverty and is going to the future!", Kirby tells the audience.

The Survivalists aren't surprised that Jayma, one of the last hunters of the Charngashnar, seems grumpy, but that's forgotten once all of the boys start swooning over Kenny!

Kenny is rocking that coat!

"Next come the Gwarashnar! The group commonly called poor and primitive shows that primal don't care! This ancient style has been worn since humanity's beginning, and famous victor of the 41st Hunger Games, and now fashion designer, Baba Ji wanted to channel that look!", Mystic Phiri says.

This time, the Survivalists are all over the women and their stylish but indeed basic outfits! The runway doesn't match them, though...but that problem's gone once a simulation shows up! The audience goes wild!

Sayla's really catching the audience's eye!

The simulation ends as the Suxnei come out in a carriage, decked in a style from almost two centuries ago! The audience goes crazy once more! Some teenagers are grossed out by the old-fashioned look, but the makeup on the contestants makes them look flawless anyways!

"The fashion designer for the Suxnei, Panda In Da Hood, got her muse from looking at our first-ever Hunger Games records when this style was doing a comeback! Our audience seems to love seeing this old style!", Mystic Phiri yells out amongst the screams.

The Survivalists especially loves Faith's dyed hair, and Hobbes' retro suit! They might have the most fans as of right now!

Hobbes and Faith are really popular with the audience, their looks are perfect!

Finally, the runway floods with water as the Údnei arrive in their traditional boats! The Survivalists haven't seen the Údnei's traditional clothing ever before!

"The designer Question, infamous sole victor of the 67th Hunger Games, went to the many temples of the Údnei to gather inspiration for this style on a journey of self-discovery! Priestesses and priests, give it up for our finale!", Kirby practically screams.

The Survivalists dig this style! High Priestess Batari looks majestic in her necklace and headpiece, but Roshani wins the hearts of the audience with his boyish, but handsome, looks! The audience is a bit tired so they aren't as enthusiastic, but they love this just as much as they did the other styles!

Roshani's quickly gaining friends in the Capitol!

The Survivalists vote for their favourites based on the amount of claps as Mystic Phiri and Kirby also judge the contestants. Within a few minutes, Mystic Phiri announces that Faith has won for the females! Her retro classic look and strawberry blonde hair has gone over very well with the crowd!

Congratulations to Faith!

Kirby announces that Roshani has won for the males! The priest look of the Sun-Men-Nei religion of his people gave him a handsome but adorable look!

Congratulations to Roshani! He's quite surprised!

As the fashion show ends, and the contestants are applauded over and over again, Overseer Neff watches from his office...

Chapter 8
Deceiver

Overseer Neff was quite happy with Gucci Boi Brandon and Panda In Da Hood. They had great designs. Baba Ji and Question were natives; they were going to have to do more to earn the Overseer's approval.

The festivities were going well. The present Survivalists appeared to be more rowdy than usual; with the inclusion of adults in the Hunger Games, the Survivalists had more relatable contestants than the usual fare of children.

Batari sacrifices Survivalists and is one of the few public detractors of the Overseer; Hobbes hacked into the Overseer's data; Jayma assassinated an ally of Matt's. Almost all of the adults chosen for the Hunger Games were there on purpose. Slowly but surely, the rebellion movement is growing.

And it has to be crushed. The Overseer has just the right person in mind to help with that.

"Head Designer Ebby", he announced.

"Yes, Overseer. That's me", Ebby replied, clearly frightened by being personally called to the Overseer's office.

"As you may know by now, the few Survivalists permitted to travel outside of Oros to scrounge for supplies recently found technology from about five centuries ago, we believe", Overseer Neff begins. "This records what people do. We can show all of Oros the Hunger Games - live! This would increase the amount of supply drops tenfold, and everyone would pay much more attention to them", he finishes excitedly.

"I never knew that we discovered such a thing, but that's groundbreaking! I'll ensure that these recording things are in the arena within three days, and I'll find our top electricians to install the broadcasting stations in all major cities around Oros", Ebby replies.

"Good. We need to remind the natives that we crushed them before. The rebellion movement has recently been growing in Údnei, because of the governor there...", the Overseer stated worryingly.

"You mean the High Priestess Batari? She's in the Games. I know what you want, Overseer. I'll ensure that she will have plenty of arena events coming her way!", Ebby assures him. And with that, she excuses herself.

Overseer Neff was lying about the 'new' equipment; the Overseers have had access to it, and other 'lost' technologies, such as guns, since Oros was founded. But it had to remain a secret as long as it could to prevent a rebellion.

Now was the time to bring out television.

Chapter 9
Publicity

Isabelle was breathing in, and breathing out, trying to rehearse her lines. She and Kenny were the first pair to be interviewed. Then Jayma and Volt, followed by Alondra and Usopp, and then the other groups.

Isabelle's silky, icey blue dress would puff up a fur hood during her entrance to make Isabelle appear more 'regal', as Gucci Boi Brandon put it. Kenny was wearing his same outfit from the fashion show; it won him a lot of applause.

Mystic Phiri was interviewing the Charngashnar and the Suxnei. That's not good; Isabelle was a big fan of Kirby when he was a part of the famous boy band, Oros Boyzzz, and would have been less nervous around him.

Whatever, time to go on! Isabelle grabs Kenny and tells him it's time.

"We can do this. Let's go!", Kenny reassures her.

Mystic Phiri smiles warmly at Isabelle and Kenny, as crowds of Survivalists cheer below the podium.

"Welcome to our first interviewees, Isabelle and Kenny! The Capitol must be a big shock for you guys, huh?", she asks.

The grand interviewing stage!

"Well, in Charngashnar, our new cities are all heated and the design is similar to here. The snow melts in May for us and comes back in September, after all", Kenny answers to thunderous applause.

"That's great! Have a seat, both of you. Let's get right in! So, any alliances that you guys are looking to join?".

This isn't so bad. Isabelle answers for Kenny and says that they're looking to form an alliance with Cosmo from Gwarashnar. They've only brought it up once, but it's better to say that that could happen compared to saying you have nobody.

Mystic Phiri jokes around with them, and after a few questions about the Games, asks them about home.

"Isabelle, your public portfolio shows some impressive achievements. You did a lot in your town of Twarsha. What do you miss the most about your hometown?".

Isabelle is feeling emotional, but she powers through.

"I loved the central den; before the founding of Oros, our ancestors had to live in the den and its many caves during the long and harsh winters. We still spend major celebrations there, even if it's mostly a museum now. I liked the sense of togetherness that our community had there", Isabelle replied. Home is far away now...before she even realises it, Kenny is leading her backstage, and the interview is over.

Kirby is enjoying his interviews! He got some insight into the major alliance forming between Zetsu, Robin, Abu, Hobbes, and Sophia. The contestants all seem lively and interesting, unlike Kirby expected them to be. He reminds himself that it's probably all an act to help them stay strong before the Games...

Next up, Batari and Roshani were being interviewed!

Both of their outfits are fitted to make them seem intimidating; from Roshani's broad chestpiece and clay mask covering his face, to Batari's two-foot tall headpiece and sparkling necklace. They wave at the audience members cheering and screaming in support.

"Welcome to the High Priestess Batari and Orolympics champion Roshani! Take a seat", Kirby yells. "We're getting right into this! Neither of you seem to be strongly allied with anyone, but each other. What's up?".

Batari answers fiercely. "As the High Priestess of the Sun-Men-Nei, I cannot associate with heathens, like Joe from the previous interview. They risk death by the fire of the Údnei natives! Roshani is descended from our best warriors, earning him great athletic ability. The two of us will burn down the arena and win this. I swear by the Sun!".

To the High Priestess, she comes before anyone else.

Kirby is taken aback as the audience gasps. Roshani chuckles.

"You cannot blame our Sun Daughter for taking everything so seriously, Survivalists. If she falls, then so do the Údnei. She is our governor, and our role model. We will do our best!", he tells the audience, amidst the restarting cheers.

The interview continues, and backstage, Joe sneers at the repeated mentions of the Sun-Men-Nei religion. Batari is obviously being a devil's advocate, since Joe mentioned that if he had to kill anyone, it would be her. The enmity between them isn't even a secret. Well, if the nonbelievers are going down according to her, then the believers are too according to Joe.

I wipe away my tears, as Ianiant and Kirby comfort me.

"There isn't any hatred between us contestants this year, except for Joe and the High Priestess...I don't want to kill anyone. Only Sayori is younger than me, I can't kill anyone! I don't even have any alliances yet. I'm sorry for turning this into the sob story of Sophia, but it's been really difficult!", I tell Kirby.

Ianiant says that I'm welcome to join him if I want, and I can hear some of the Survivalists in the audience mentioning that they want to give me supply drops once the games begin.

Playing on emotions is the only way Sayori and I are going to win this. Sayori has her innocent façade; and I have this.

I barely succeed in hiding my grin.

Post by: Abu on August 12, 2018, 09:16:50 AM
The filler plot is over after this!

The contestants are worried about the imminence of the Games...

Chapter 10
Finality

It's been a fun few weeks in the Survivalist cities for Faith. The contestants attended celebrations in various locations, had more interviews so that Oros could get to know them better, and, Faith thinks, they feel united. It's like Sophia said in her now infamous interview; she just doesn't know how she's going to kill anyone!

But most contestants are becoming content with the idea, even if it's an unfortunate one. At the end, twenty two people will be dead, and most of the kills are going to be from other contestants.

And, for the most part, they were ready to accept death. Some, like Abu and Kanga, are pretty much nervous wrecks right now, but everyone else Faith knows dealt with their stress during the first week.

Now it was time for their last three days together in a training centre. Faith was working on her combat skills; she chose to present it to the judges but got a poor score. By working with Isabelle, she's managed to improve it to a good level.

Faith doesn't have any alliances yet. She's reluctant to join half of the other Suxnei, plus Zetsu, because if that alliance grows any larger then people are going to target it first. Plus, Sophia might join them too.

Kanga and Isabelle don't have an alliance either, but Faith is close with them. Maybe she'll bring it up at dinner today.

Roshani walks back and forth in his bedroom. What should he do? He feels terrible for acting cold to most of his contestants. Sure, they mostly ignored him because he was sick, but that never meant they disliked him.

Roshani is definitely going to ally with High Priestess Batari; she named a temple after him when he became the champion of the Orolympics five years ago, and he feels indebted for the honour.

But she's so ambitious, and he's so...wishy-washy. Roshani doesn't even know what he's going to do if he wins, whereas everyone else has already stated their fantasies about a dozen times.

It's keeping him awake, for the sake of the Sun! Once he finally gets to sleep, Roshani realises, there will only be two more days left before the Games start.

Maybe training tomorrow will help him. Training, training, and training until every muscle aches. Then Roshani can rest for the final day and think clearly.

Because he really doesn't want to lose himself in the arena like some other contestants have.

Nobody does.

Chapter 11
The Bloodbath

The bright light blinds me as my tube is raised towards the arena. We stayed overnight below it. Definitely not comforting to sleep below a place where you were likely to die imminently.

"Where are we going?", I wonder. The arena probably wouldn't be in a cold area like the past two years. Our outfits are extremely revealing.

Soon I'd have to kill someone..."Stay calm, Abu", I tell myself. "Get with Hobbes and Robin, find Zetsu and Sophia, then get out of here". Hopefully the arena is nice. Will it be?

I get my answer as my eyes adjust to the Sun's shine. The arena is, indeed, beautiful! We are in a large lake surrounded by a wetland with marshes and plains. A huge waterfall must be near us; its roar is audible from here. I see high cliffs in the distance, alongside forests. We are in a mountain valley.

In the centre of the lake is an island with materials; it is surrounded by Tashla stones for our Sun-Men-Nei religion.

This is definitely near Suxnei! The Údnei have even more Tashla and marshes than us, but they don't have plains or waterfalls. That's nice to know. My family is nearby...

I see the other twenty three contestants around me; to my left is Robin, and to my right is Faith. Hobbes is to the left of Robin. I can't see Zetsu, but I can see Sophia farther to the right.

The clock starts counting down. One minute left.

I hear birds chirping, and I can see a few goats running. Stay calm. I'm possibly going to kill people, but I have to stay calm.

It's a very calm and sunny morning, but we were about to kill...

For what feels like an hour, we contestants all stand awkwardly on our podiums, ready to dive into the water.

Then it hits zero seconds, and everyone's swimming. I see Robin swim away as planned; I follow her. But where's Hobbes?! I can see Sophia being carried by someone as they swim away; poor girl, she must be so frail. I guess we aren't going to be in an alliance for now. Since I couldn't see Zetsu, he must be on the opposite side...but where is he going?

I'm a fast swimmer; I make it to shore a few seconds before Robin.

"Hobbes is on the island! He's coming back, I just saw. I know it's not like we planned. But we have to find Zetsu!", Robin says, panting. We're both tired.

In the distance, I see Zetsu running away from everyone, towards the forests in the east. Jayma and Volt are together and appear to be chasing after him, but then they turn left; good. Zetsu isn't being trailed.

"We have no chance of allying with Zetsu right now...", I say sadly, pointing out to Robin that almost all of the action is towards the direction he ran. We are alone beside a marsh, waiting for Hobbes.

We see Hobbes arrive about twenty seconds later, with a bow, three spears, and a basket of food.

"Alright, people are on me, we're out of here!", Hobbes yells, grabbing our arms and sprinting away with us. I look back and see Roshani on our trail, but he gives up after someone shoots an arrow at him.

This is surreal! It's like it's not even happening...but it is, and just a few feet away from us, Joe pulls a spear from his shoulder and throws it at Faiz's chest.

The first casualty of the 74th Hunger Games is Faiz. His corpse bleeds profusely-

Why am I looking at him? What am I doing?

Hobbes lets go of us, but we three continue sprinting. Sprinting like we're in a dream. I hear Joe crying as we run away from him, and I think that Robin and Hobbes are wailing too. But as usual, I can't bring myself to feel anything on the outside...

Ianiant screams in pain as he trips over an electric wire.

"Who did that?! Come out, coward, and face me!", he yells. Behind him, Kowhai, wearing a clay mask, screams a battle cry as she runs up to Ianiant, ready to stab him. She carries a bow, but being so close to Ianiant, does not plan on using it.

Kowhai ensures that her victims don't fight back.

"This is it?", Ianiant thinks gloomily, struggling to move his legs. Kowhai was a young girl, but she outsmarted him. Ianiant feels terrible. He isn't ready to go yet.

And luckily for him, Usopp is right there, throwing a stone club at Kowhai's head, throwing her back into the water. She struggles to bring her head up. Both of them feel sorry for her, but these are the Hunger Games. And they call for drastic measures

Ianiant throws a spear at Kowhai, but misses. His second attempt is successful.

Ianiant and Usopp have killed Kowhai. Twenty two people remain in the 74th Hunger Games.

"...she shouldn't have electrified me", Ianiant says, in a futile attempt to justify Kowhai's death. He and Usopp had killed someone who had a bright future ahead of them.

"It's terrible, man, I get you, but we have to go. Look behind you!", Usopp yells as he grabs Ianiant and they run away together. Ianiant does look behind him and he sees a massive fist fight between Isabelle, Kanga, Cosmo, Faith, and Kenny.

"Yeah...", Ianiant says worryingly. "Let's get out of here".

Together they run towards the forests, locked into a guilty conscience.

The Arena

Head Designer Ebby squints at the tiny televised footage of the arena, shown to all viewers throughout Oros.

It was a beautiful arena; she loved the location. An isolated mountain valley once inhabited by the Suxnei, but now only populated by many animals. The largest waterfall in Oros originates from this valley.

Finally, Oros will experience the Games firsthand!

The contestants don't know that they're being watched. This is going to be interesting.

Title: Re: The Hunger Games (AU) (Chapter 11 released)
Post by: Abu on August 23, 2018, 08:38:02 AM
Here is the next chapter. I am focusing on less characters now, but there will be a surplus of chapters (I don't like long chapters).

Chapter 12
It Sets In

Killing.

That is the new reality of the contestants; they are in The Hunger Games.

As Joe breaths labouriously in a bush where he has good camouflage from any onlookers, he berates himself for thinking he ever had a chance. When he looks at his bleeding left arm, completely numb, he feels dread fill his body. Within a day, it would definitely be infected, unless Joe could amputate it.

This was nothing like his victorious Hunger Games, where Joe outsmarted the entire arena and electrocuted five people during the first few minutes of the game. His prosthetic leg isn't that big of an issue, but his spinal injuries are.

And now Joe was practically just delaying his death. Faiz had really done a number on him, even if Joe managed to impale him.

There isn't anything to fear. Joe does not believe in a deity. There is always the possibility of a higher power, but he doesn't buy into that. And yet the prospect of an afterlife now intrigues him as the world starts to become fuzzy. In the small chance that there is an afterlife...what would happen?

Suddenly, people become audible, and Joe's heart practically stops beating there and then. Joe still lies behind the bushes.

A beautiful place to die; amidst the animals of the valley.

He doesn't know what else to do. He's already thought about his life, achievements, and family over the past few hours. He also saw a strange flying piece of technology flying about, no doubt one of those rumoured broadcasting devices. Joe's family would know that he went courageously. That he had no choice.

Batari and Roshani appear as Joe's vision begins blurring again. Why! Why did it have to be her? "I don't want to die to her...", Joe thinks. He hears Batari say something in their native language, but he can barely make it out. Are they showing mercy?

Their language is only used during prayers, sacrifices, or funerals nowadays.

Joe isn't dead yet, but he can't see anymore, and everything is painful.

He might as well be.

"Poxti Suxli sekxeyti", the High Priestess growls in the Údnei's native tongue. "[You should] hope that the Sun saves you". It's an oddly depressing site to see Joe, her only critic in Údnei, dying. But from Batari's experience, she knows that he won't truly pass for about ten more minutes as his body shuts down.

Guiltily, Batari stabs Joe with her dagger through the chest, and he dies instantly, without pain.

"Dzhoyi, Suxli, sekxeywa. Neguxwame tokrewa deigowa arskuweikwor".

"To Joe, the Sun, save him. I do not want to let him burn like the rest of them". He was innocent. Disabled. Deluded. Batari had never really thought about the hundreds of people that she had sacrificed. But now that it was someone she knew from her own tribe...

And something in Batari's mind snaps.

Photos coming later, but here is something I wrote in 15 minutes to make up for the lack of chapters. Dholes are wild dogs and tapirs are a type of mammal.

Back on usual schedule after another chapter this evening.

Chapter 13
Dusk

Sayla spits out chewed willow bark, and applies it to Sophia's arm. Sophia winces as the willow bark is pushed into her wound. But she's glad that Sayla had found her and Leia after they were nearly mauled by a pack of dholes, and offered her assistance.

Leia does not have any severe injuries, but Sophia's left arm is entirely shredded. Two dholes had bit it over and over again. Sayla had said that without the willow bark, it would have to be amputated. Sophia trusted her on that; she couldn't feel parts of her arm. It was frightening.

The dholes are still burnt into Sophia's mind.

Leia was pacing back and forth nearby, on guard. The sun was setting. They had already heard wolves howling, and Sayla said that she had seen bear dung. The real danger in this arena came from the animals.

Sayla uses reeds to create a cast. Once the job is done, she whispers."I expect no repayment. Prosper, Leia, and take care of this young one".

And with that she was gone.

"Why do you think she helped us, then?", Leia questions.

Sophia shrugs. "Why did you help me? Because I don't have any skills. Now, let's do the one and only thing I'm good at. Let's meditate".

And so Sophia and Leia calm themselves through meditation, guiding attention away from their injuries.

But Sophia finds it difficult not to tell anyone that this is all a ruse. It's just such a perfectly good plan!

Jayma points to a tapir hiding behind a bush. Young and fat, isolated from a herd. This would be easy.

Volt silently moves to the right of the tapir, while Jayma moves to the left. There were tbleep bushes or large trees blocking escape if it goes any other way.

Jayma readies her handcrafted wooden bow, and fires at the tapir's right eye. It suddenly starts flailing around, running in circles. Not seeing that Volt is on its right, it runs towards him, but is greeted with a spear to the brain.

Tapirs are nocturnal, and masters of disguise.

Dinner for the hunters!

Within a few minutes, the sun has set, and the tapir is fully skinned. Jayma and Volt only communicate in hand gestures at night. Volt has quickly learned the hang of the sign language of the old Charngashnar hunters.

In the silence of the night, they are both startled when they hear…something…running towards them. They take their meat and climb trees, awaiting for what is about to appear.

Jayma and Volt gape at what they see coming.

Chapter 14
Deep Black

Zetsu sprints as fast as he can, the adrenaline in his body making him forget the bite on his left leg. Wolves run beside him, being slowed down by the tbleep underbrush of this part of the forest.

Behind Zetsu are Isabelle and Cosmo, who were looking to form an alliance until the wolves arrived. But for an inexplicable reason, they didn't go after Isabelle or Cosmo.

Just Zetsu. Great.

"If you do not kill once in the Games, then they will not let you win. A disaster will target you. It targetted me; poisonous rot fumes. I made it out once I killed my partner out of desperation", Jayma whispers to Volt, her eyes giving away her hardiness. Volt could tell that Jayma regretted that kill, and knowing that she won't win, doesn't want the same to happen to their duo shall the Game Designer choose to separate them.

Nodding, silent as always, Volt begins to make his move.

Zetsu struggles to climb a tree, wolves yapping and barking underneath him, running around to evade the incoming spears thrown by Isabelle. One dies a bloody death after Cosmo arrives and throws heavy, spiked bolas at the head of one.

Lucky shot. It was the pack leader.

Volt observes the wolves running away. They will find some other prey tonight...and they're going to have to find a new leader.

(https://cdn.vox-cdn.com/thumbor/rXJI6h51J76LJMAGLOhLDGLDJiM=/148x0:1768x1080/1280x854/cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_image/image/48934333/FEB-SS-09-NightSurvival_239855.0.0.jpg)
Wolves are afraid of fire. If only this group knew that...

Everyone's heart is racing. Volt is nervous.

Isabelle raises her hand to Zetsu, who accepts it, wincing as the adrenaline surge ends. Cosmo frantically begins searching through his equipment for something to sterilise the wound.

But it won't matter, because Volt...he will kill one of them, yes.

Volt fires an arrow at Zetsu's head, readying another one to go straight to his heart.

Zetsu registers...something, but he doesn't really understand why Isabelle lets out one of the most bloodcurdling screams he has ever heard, or why Cosmo, crying, grabs Isabelle and they both run away.

He can't think.

He doesn't feel anything as he dies. Nothing at all.

Jayma pats Volt on the back. "You eased his pain. His spirit will walk to a better world without pain. Isabelle and the other boy-".

"Cosmo," Volt corrects Jayma.

"Yes. Isabelle and Cosmo did not have anything to help the wound. This had to be done, Volt. Do not guilt yourself. You have great precision and good hunter eyes...so silent, that nothing ever spots you. What will your hunter name be, Volt?".

Volt feels some guilt at killing Zetsu. But he actually has what it takes to win this. He can do this silently, like a ghost.

That's it.

"Call me Ghost".

I was going to do that, actually. Or periodically update with portfolios. I did not want to make this chapter too long.

Thank you for the kind comment. I hope to instill development in other forumers as well, and perhaps two of the Far Cry Primal characters. I'm still working with who to make main characters.

Portoflio #3
The Memorial

Head Game Designer Ebby examines her map of the arena. There were lots of opportunities to create arena disasters. In the northwest, an earthquake could cause high cliffs to collapse within minutes, wreaking havoc for everyone on them and below, due to rock falls. In the southern marshlands, a very strong rain would cause an enormous flood, forcing the contestants caught in it to die, or swim to the Fallen Rocks complex.

But this arena was so huge, and the contestants so spread out. Only twice has Ebby, or any of the other Game Designers, observed a meeting between separate groups. That would have to change.

Overseer Neff had ordered that using something called a hologram projector, at midnight, the deaths of all contestants would be announced, along with their killers. It would make the contestants rowdier and angrier; Head Game Designer Ebby was reluctant to do it. But, orders from the Overseer are always orders.

"It's ten minutes until midnight. Game Designer Tony, I need you to begin the procedures for Drone X3 to project the hologram", orders Ebby.

"Game Designer Oofis, you have a taste for music. Oh, that rhymes!", she yells, laughing creepily. "Help Tony select a good track that will evoke emotion from everyone!".

Still barely containing her laughter, Ebby sits and waits, suddenly serious again. Nine minutes, now.

The Deceased
24. Faiz
23. Kowhai
22. Joe
21. Zetsu

The Killers
Batari (1)
Ghost (1)
Joe (1)
Ianiant (1)
Usopp (1)

Head Game Designer Ebby scowls. She still doesn't know why it was an almost unanimous decision to change Volt's name to Ghost in all media. He's definitely a dark horse, so the Survivalists adore him. Publicity over equality, of course. That's the motto...

The Gwarashnar are definitely going to be angry. Half of their contestants are already dead. The Survivalists may take pity and send some supplies to Sayla, Cosmo, and Ay-Chao.

Before going to bed, she takes one last look at the observed alliances.

Abu has gone solo. Robin and Hobbes are still together.
Ay-Chao has just formed an alliance with Ianiant, while Usopp went solo.
Batari and Roshani are still allied.
Faith appears to have just formed an alliance with Kanga.
Isabelle and Cosmo are still allied.
Jayma and Ghost would never separate.
Sophia and Leia are allied.

This would be an interesting Hunger Games.

From now on, I will only write my character in the first-person to avoid inaccurately describing forumers.

Chapter 15
Hiding

I wake up, my back aching, and my neck feeling twisted. As I come to my senses, I remember where I am; I found a tree trunk with a large hole in it yesterday evening. It took me around three hours to carve out a shelter in it, but it worked.

I did not take any risks. I covered up the entrance with pieces of wood and leaves to make it seem natural.

Considering the fact that I'm still tired, it must be around 8:00. I've never woken up past that in my life.

I sigh as I start planning out the day. It's going to be tough to be working solo, but I can't trust Robin and Hobbes with my life. I hope they'll figure out I'm not dead eventually. Perhaps they would go to find Zetsu; it's too dangerous, in my opinion, but they insisted on it.

I'm going to have to kill something to get protein. I already have some edible mushrooms and berries. Perhaps I can make jam with the cranberries? This tree is only a few minutes away from a huge river system, so I'll have free water available.

I'm also going to have to build a rope system to make it easier to climb up to this hiding spot; I might be able to build a trap so that if anyone but me attempts to climb up they'll die...but I can't really remember how they taught us to build that, I'm not good with crafts.

I'm going to spend the rest of the Hunger Games hiding. It's the safest choice.

And hopefully, Hobbes and Robin will do well.

Faith and Kanga walk slowly and carefully over the marshlands in the south of the arena. One wrong step, and it'll take a few minutes to get out. They have to be careful here.

"Kanga, I went to sleep later than you", Faith says, interrupting the silence. "You know what? They announced the deaths somehow!".

Kanga is shocked. "How did they do that? And who died?".

"I have no idea", Faith responds. "And I remember Faiz, Joe, and Zetsu died...maybe Ay-Chao was the other person. I forget".

Kanga becomes glum. He didn't know any of them well, but he'd talked to Ay-Chao before. "I hope it won't come to that for us". Faith agrees.

They trudge forwards, swatting at mosquitoes and flies. There are a lot of mushrooms here; Kanga recognises them well, and takes the edible ones for consumption.

The marshes are eerie, but beautiful.

After an hour of walking, they're both tired.

"Alright, Faith, I need to...relieve myself, okay?", Kanga says nervously.

"Go ahead, I'll keep watch. The marshes are becoming sparser here", Faith replied.

As Kanga walks away from Faith, he hears something rustling in the bushes, and readies his spear.

He yells for Faith to come help when Kenny jumps out, throwing a club at Kanga, who barely dodges it. Kenny seems intent on killing at least one of them, but strength comes in numbers. Kenny runs at Kanga, trying to club his skull and yelling "Get out of MY swamp!". But Faith swoops in and shoots an arrow at Kenny's chest, severely weakening him.

Kanga takes this opportunity to steal Kenny's club. For a moment, Kenny stares at him, eyes filled with tears, breathing heavily and clutching his chest. He didn't notice who he was attacking before.

"What are you waiting for, child? I thought you were...someone else...kill me."

Kanga can't do it.

He grabs Faith's arm and sprints away with her, silent. Kenny would maybe live, maybe not. But Kanga couldn't kill someone else. They run until they collapse, muddy, into a puddle of brackish water. Faith looks at the sky and her face goes pale.

"Hey, Kanga, look behind you. Why is it so cloudy where we're going?".

Chapter 16
The Flood

Ianiant desperately attempts to pull Ay-Chao out from some quicksand in a swamp.

"Pull my other arm too, don't break my right arm!" yells Ay-Chao.

"You're lucky that there aren't any alligators here. I saw one yesterday," Ianiant points out, to Ay-Chao's disdain and paling face.

Within a few minutes, Ay-Chao was out, gasping for breath. Despite the age gap between her and Ianiant, she's already put her trust into him. Brutally honest and brave, Ianiant has already helped her a lot where she couldn't; hunting animals was rather tough for Ay-Chao.

"Well...let's continue to see what's at the end of the swamp," Ay-Chao says once she feels fine. She could have died there. But she would live for now. Hopefully until the end...

After a few minutes of trudging through the horrendously filthy and densely-vegetated marshland, Ianiant notices something shiny in the sky. Could it be a supply drop?

"Ay-Chao. I think it's for you," he says, noticing that it's floating towards her and not him.

Ay-Chao catches a floating metal sphere with a parachute, and opens it up. To her surprise, it's a meal of cornflakeses!

"IANIANT! Try these! This is the best dessert from the Gwarashnar ever!", Ay-Chao screams excitedly. Someone must have taken pity on her after she got stuck in the quicksand.

Ianiant is reluctant to try them, but after his first scoopful, he joins Ay-Chao in devouring half of the cornflakeses. They haven't eaten much since the Hunger Games started. Hungry they were indeed...

Blissfully, the two of them continue on, stomachs full, unaware of the thunderclouds they were walking towards.

Faith shivers, wrapping herself into a jaguar skin blanket to keep her warm as Kanga sews another one for himself. They had encountered one about an hour ago. Now, in the afternoon, they had reached the end of the marshlands and arrived at a large lake, surrounded by chilly fog and strong winds.

"It's raining," Kanga takes note. "I see a small cave to the left in those rocks, near the end of the arena," he points out to Faith. The two of them rush to the cave, avoiding the oddly chilly rain.

They hear a roar, and stare as a cave lion marches from the depths of the cave, licking its lips.

Kanga and Faith run out of the cave towards the lake within moments. The cave lion, reluctant to get wet, seems wary.

Suddenly, a clap of thunder explodes, sounding like an earthquake. The cave lion runs back into the cave, while Faith and Kanga begin struggling to stay afloat. This is a small lake but these waves are huge...

"It's an arena event!" Faith realises. She and Kanga feel hopeless as more and more rain than either of them have ever seen before falls from the sky. The lake quickly floods and water gushes in all directions. The cave they were in before is hidden by a waterfall newly formed from the rock above it.

Kanga and Faith clutch onto each other, each keeping the other afloat. That's all that they can do as the entire area around them seems to flood.

Ay-Chao desperately attempts to pull Ianiant out of the floodwater.

She's found a rock with an inclined surface, preventing any water from rising this high; it isn't going any higher anyways. The wind is the main problem right now.

But Ianiant hadn't climbed up in time.

"Ianiant! No, you're much younger than me! Hold on!".

Ay-Chao yells support to Ianiant, encouraging him to keep waiting for the storm to end, even as debris hits his body and his face.

Bleeding and in pain, Ianiant is reminded of how Kowhai died. How he killed her. As his head goes under the water again, Ay-Chao almost falls in too.

Ay-Chao would drown with Ianiant at this rate; her exertion is causing the rock to crumble. And she has already almost fallen in twice.

Ianiant can't let an innocent person die instead of him. At least he should be able to tread water and stay afloat until the storm passes...

And so he lets go.

"NO!", shrieks Ay-Chao, helpless as Ianiant smiles at her, before his weak body submerges.

For the last time.

Chapter 17
The Owl

Overseer Matt Neff commands a ton of power, but his position isn't one that anyone should want to have. And yet, "Overseer Tony" or "Overseer Ebere" seem more and more likely as possibilities as Matt's term comes to an end.

He was the only Overseer elected under the age of 60; he will be the only Overseer to willingly pass on his position, because he can't take it anymore!

Slamming his desk with his fists and calming down, Matt goes through the never-ending list of things to do. Build another new city; eradicate the Sun-Men-Nei religion; prepare for the 75th Hunger Games.

And torture dissenters, again.

Now Matt understands why, despite most Survivalists living to their late 70's, all of the past Overseers died before 72 except one. This was the most stressful job. Always keeping the dumb natives in their place...hopefully the television will change things, and end any thoughts of rebellion.

Matt is considering somehow ordering the switching of his position with Head Game Designer Ebby next year. She would love to do something other than arena designing, which Matt loves, but she isn't good at. The recent arena disaster only killed one person, after all...

Matt's doorbell rings. He sighs as he sees Ebby come in, but becomes interested once he sees how excited she seems.

"Overseer, sir...come and look at what Sayori just did."

Sayori whistles a high-pitched tune, and an owl glides towards her, making soft, chirping sounds. She smiles as the owl lands onto her arm, creating a tickling sensation. Sayori would call him Deca; his feathers were arranged in clusters of tens.

It was tough taming Deca. He has a hurt wing; the debris from the flood damaged it. Sayori approached him carefully, and fed him, earning his trust. She had a gift with animals. They loved her soothing nature.

Deca the owl.

"Mi heku neibasi hasata," she whispers to the preening owl. "Be my eyes in the sky". Owls were sacred to everyone in Oros, but especially to the religious Údnei. Owl taming has become rare, but Sayori still did it. Her reward is a scout who would guard her for saving its life.

As Deca weakly attempts flying, to his surprise, his wing already feels better.

Deca screeches as, up ahead, he sees conflict.

Sayori nods, and rushes to observe.

totally forgot about forum stuff but happy my first ever Flipline FC is in the Fanfic! and yes I will now shamelessly promote my old Random Customer Games fanfics. Too lazy to link right now but all links are in "Dis Gal's Fanfiction" or whatever the topic is.

Anyway I'm reading this now and I have only one request: Alondra has phenomenal wilderness survival skills, she would be like a smarter Foxface- but she would also be willing to form an alliance, maybe with Faith. I think 3 is a pretty lame score, but understandable given the fact that it takes a lot of time to build a shelter. So if you could maybe include a brief paragraph or two showing what she's doing that would be nice (and she is definitely the kind of person who tries to avoid fighting because she gets angry and upset when faced with injustice like forced killing.)

Also she is definitely very involved with the rebellion, but good at keeping secrets under the facade of jokes and a carefree attitude.
