Discuss features on the forum here.

[ move]Moving text[ /move]

I found it in Help. I wish it worked. It would be perfect for advertising in signatures. :/

It used to exist but Matt removed it in 2012 since nobody used it except to annoy people. Same with changing the size of your text.

I wish he'd add that stuff back.

Omg I remember when everyone would post in huge font size to make it impossible to scroll through it all

I can 100% see why the move and font size features were removed, but it would be cool to have the glow and shadow ones back

I know I’ve said this a couple of times, but I think that if Matt turns on post count on a couple more boards, it would actually help towards stopping hyperposting. There would be no need for it, as people would just gain post count naturally when they post in off-topic boards, and wouldn’t have to spam Gameria-related boards to gain post count.

Fair point, but the bigger issue is that a lot of people's post counts as shown on their profile are higher than their total number of posts due to posts being deleted

As someone who was active when the off-topic boards counted posts, that's not true, people just hyperposted in those boards as well
The only way to 100% stop hyperposting would be to just turn off post count

Yup, people were just making topics like "Count upwards to 1 Million!" and posting over and over there to increase their post count and get new ranks and titles.  The ranks/titles were originally intended to show someone was an active member who was making valuable/relevant posts and adding to discussions of the games, so that's why we turned off post count for off-topic boards and things that weren't really based around game discussions.

We could always try turning off post count entirely some time and see if that improves things.

I find that it hasn't really been an issue as of the past two years. If it ever resurges it could be wise to remove it though.

When I was younger I was a major "hyperposter" but now I realise how uncommon this is on other forums, and I stopped too. I guess it's due to the younger demographic of this forum. No other forum I'm on has people who care about their post count!

It's the younger users 100%, when I was 8 I joined a forum where I was by far the youngest active member, and I was the only one who hyperposted or cared about post count

The colour system is also a contributing factor, a lot of people only hyperpost because they want to be orange/sea green/purple

The only reason I've been posting more is because I'm tired of my name being blue. There was a suggestion awhile back to add an option of changing the color of your name once every 3 months like with names, and that really wouldn't be too bad of an idea :-\

The thing is that Matt (possibly Joe?) would have to manually update your post count to change your color as far as I know and that could be a hassle

Or they could add new ranks. Like a rank for blue names called Blueberry Buddy or something, and give everyone who wants a blue name that rank.

Just gonna jump up on the train of the post count discussion.

I've never cared about it (apart from colours). I just care that I contribute to the community, be it in off topic boards or in Gameria boards or those other ones that count, wherever applicable. Even then I still use the shoutbox more than all of those, as it helps contribute more to the community according to me.

In fact I've not had a colour for 2 and a half years and still am not complaining, it'll come naturally when me contributing to the community well, will cause it.

However, custom colours would be perfect, until someone chooses yellow, pastel yellow, beige or white......

having coloured roles would mean there's a finite amount of colours, like maybe 6-8, to choose from

Remember that to choose our colours we have to update the forum. Matt suggested this long ago but it just isn’t on his priority list.

"Thanks, that'll be helpful.  The thing with the update is that it's not the same as a normal "update" to the forum -- it's actually completely deleting this current forum and starting from scratch on a new one (though we copy over all of the users and boards and posts).  So everything that was added will be completely gone, and will have to be remade in a different way for the new forum -- they're actually very different from each other in code, so most of what we did can't just be copied over, we'll have to redesign things from scratch.

Some things maybe can't even be done with the new forum -- I know "ignoring users" is built-in to the new forum, but it works differently:  You still see topics and posts of an ignored user, it just says something like "This post is hidden because you're ignoring this user -- click here to view the post anyway".  There's probably not any easy way to change that, so we'd have to be okay with trade-offs where we lose some features of the forum if we really want to change username colors.

The other issue is that we lose the entire look of the forum with the Flipline theme, how the posts look, how the boards look, how the menus look, etc.  It's not compatible at all with the theme this forum uses, so we need to design a new theme (in a new format) to try to match it as close as possible -- though it probably won't be exactly the same.

And there wouldn't be any going back to the old forum either, once we copied all the users and posts to the new forum it formats everything differently, so you can't switch it back to the old one.  So if you didn't like how the new forum looked or worked, you'd be out of luck since we'd be stuck with it permanently."

This is what Matt said in 2017 on the subject.

Unless the forum would look very generic with the update, I wouldn't mind tbh

They could potentially be abused as well.

there isn't any way to use them without abusing them

There's literally zero benefit in adding moving text, shadow text, and text sizes. I'm glad they were removed.
