Title: 2020 United States Presidential Election
Post by: Penguin022 on January 07, 2020, 04:40:34 PM
I'm sure this topic will create some discourse, but the first primaries for the democrats start next month and the race has been really interesting.

The current polling percentages for the democrats are here: https://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2020/president/us/2020_democratic_presidential_nomination-6730.html

I don't support the policies of Trump, and none of the Democrat candidates other than Sanders really appeal to me. Yang is also pretty cool as a candidate. I voted those two in the poll, and don't really see myself supporting anyone else except one of those two so I will just hope they win the DNC nomination,

By the way, I actually met Bernie at an event in Washington. It was very nice!

Even though I support President Trump, if one democratic had to beat him in the 2020 election, I would hope it would be either Tulsi Gabbard or Pete Buttigieg. I also kind of like Andrew Yang. His ideas have good intentions, but many of them seem way to unrealistic to fulfill.

I’ve been very disappointed with Donald trump’s behavior towards environmental issues, so I’m hoping that someone else will be elected. Climate change is a massive issue and rolling back protections isn’t going to help. I’m not familiar with other candidates though

Brother E: Taxes are good for some reasons, but when you have to pay taxes for your house or other goofy reasons, then they become hectic and suck up all your hard earned income.

And more taxes is not good for that reason.

Yeah, I've been following it for the last few hours, it sounds like a bloopshow. Apparently the Democratic party hung up the phone on multiple campaigns when they asked what was going on.

It sounds like Sanders, Warren and Buttigeg are leading, Klobuchar might fare better than expected and Biden will probably disappoint.

I feel like if you want gender representation you can just legislate a quota. I personally disagree with them in most cases, but some countries like Brazil and Sweden have a specific number of seats that are required to go to women. Because both countries are relatively progressive on women in politics it seems rather useless to me.

It makes sense for a country like Afghanistan to have gender quotas, though. 1/5 of all seats are required to go to women and it really helps women get a voice in the country, many people unfortunately still believe women cannot be in politics and they would not vote for a woman otherwise.

When did we support terrorism?
Terrorism is illegal violence against civilians; like many governments in the world, the United States has funded terrorist organisations to pursue its interests in other countries. In Afghanistan, the United States funded the mujahideen, which would later become the Taliban, by giving them munitions and vehicles (also planes).

Some of these mujahideen were from foreign countries that went to Afghanistan on their own, including Osama bin Laden's. At the time (1993) this is what US media had to say about Osama bin Laden..."freedom fighters" and "anti-Soviet warrior":

Also yes, with enough impact the building could collapse like that as it destroys the support system inside the building. When the top collapses (aka when a plane hits), it puts a lot more stress on the support in the lower parts. That causes it to collapse, and gradually go down as the load gets heavier. Imagine you have a tower that has support beams made out of straws, and cardboard making up each floor. If you throw a brick into your tower, it would severely damage the straws in the floor it hit. That would make the top layers start to fall. The straws on the lower layers wouldn’t be able to hold up all of the extra weight from the collapsed floors, so they would fall straight down. Also The twin towers were under a LOT of security, so it’s absolutely impossible for a bomb to be planted or even for someone to “sneak in”. Just saying.

Which ones? There are lots of countries with worse living conditions but there are none who have caused as much propped-up dictatorships, civilian casualties, and damage in warfare since 1950. Although France is giving a run for the money with the dictatorships it sets up in Africa nowadays.

Just because others are worse, doesn’t mean that it’s bad. People are more likely to show disfavor to their own country, especially one that has a lot of issues. Yes there are a lot of good things in America, like how our economy is in a great place right now. However, public schools aren’t good, the health care system is a disaster, people are unable to pay university loans and aren’t having families due to financial issues, overspending on issues over seas is prioritized over issues in our own country, and social issues such as segregation are still in full swing. It’s good to have awareness about what your country does, and this one is not doing good things

I've never lived in the middle east so I don't know what they are experiencing firsthand, but because I've always lived in the U.S, of course I'd be quick to point out the problems since I've lived it. In most of those cases they wouldn't have had to use guns in defense if the person attacking them didn't also have a gun as well. Besides gun control is for the most part about making sure people with documented cases of mental problems can't get their hands on guns. I don't even know why it's so bad of a problem, you'd think it would be common sense to have someone who isn't trusted with guns to not have them at all

It depends. What may be fine for you may be awful for others. It’s all relative. You may go to a school where shootings are very unlikely due to high security. But maybe Phil goes to one that has danger of being shot up. Your family might not have a lot of health issues and need to go to the hospital. But mine has a lot of sicknesses and injuries, and as I’ve said before, several of my family members have almost died due to poor care. Now, I am not assuming these things about you or Phil. It is just an example to prove the point

My cousins live there and I live two hours from the border so I have been there a ton of times, whereas their example was that ok no has literally never been to the "Middle East". Syria is a war-torn country in the Middle East; meanwhile, Qatar is the richest country in the world and it's also in the Middle East.

You can't really predict how well a president is going to do once they get the job, that's not only why "bad" president's are elected, but also why they usually stay a second term, because it's either a president that's not really done too well, or a president that could possibly do just as bad or even worse, so by being used to the current president many voters would just naturally pick them (people not liking change could also have something to do with this).

con·spir·a·cy the·o·ry
noun
a belief that some covert but influential organization is responsible for a circumstance or event.
"they sought to account for the attacks in terms of a conspiracy theory"

conspiracy theories are almost always not true, and caused by an overactive imagination. It's not a good thing to call yourself a conspiracy theorist because that means you are trying to come up with alternative explanations for things that are proven true.

My new avatar is not my only shocker avatar that occurred, not even recently, as in the uselectionatlas forum, it said R-NJ until December 2019 when it became D-NJ, when it was R-NJ, everyone was so sure that I would be staying a Republican, and even I was too!

In January 2020, the real party switch occurred, and now I'm a registered Democrat. This also makes me all three huge political party categories at some point (Independent, then Republican, and now Democratic.)

There is a good chance there will be a contested convention, which would probably be bad for the Democrats if they want to beat Trump. I'm assuming some of the candidates are staying in because they want to be the nominee if no candidate gets the majority. Ugh.

I find it very unlikely he'll endorse Bernie, Buttigeg's entire campaign has been built around having a more moderate candidate to defeat Trump, and he is more aligned with Biden ideologically than Bernie. I think the Democratic establishment is trying to push Biden more as the alternative to Sanders, and Buttigeg endorsing Biden would be a huge part of that.

Title: Re: 2020 United States Presidential Election
Post by: Penguin022 on March 01, 2020, 05:53:29 PM
If his goal is to take out Sanders, endorsing Biden is the main option, especially if he wants to make sure his votes don't scatter as evenly.

I would be happy for him to not endorse anyone though, because I think that'll make it more likely for Bernie to win a majority (although still less likely than when Pete was still in the race).

Title: Re: 2020 United States Presidential Election
Post by: Kowhai on March 01, 2020, 06:06:05 PM
meh, even if he does endorse, I doubt it'll make a difference. pete's campaign more than anyone else was mostly aesthetic, and biden just doesn't have the pete aesthetic. honestly if I had to pick one candidate who is most like pete aesthetically it would be warren, but she's been falling behind so I still reckon it'll be a fairly even scatter.

Title: Re: 2020 United States Presidential Election
Post by: Penguin022 on March 01, 2020, 06:18:36 PM
The aesthetic of Buttigeg's campaign does indeed fit the campaign of Warren in lots of ways, but his actual policies and reasons for running align more with Biden. Recently, he has been very fearful of Bernie being the nominee because he thinks the Democrats will lose, and has been specifically campaigning for a safer choice. The safest choice in Buttigeg's eyes would be Biden, which would definitely align with the "continuing Obama's legacy" part of his aesthetic. I think it's likely to happen. I would be happy if it doesn't affect the race to much of course.

Title: Re: 2020 United States Presidential Election
Post by: Kowhai on March 01, 2020, 06:26:43 PM
the thing I'm getting at though is that his policies weren't the reason people were voting for him, and his base isn't going to realign based on policies. I could be wrong, but even with an endorsement I doubt this will be what saves the biden campaign.

Title: Re: 2020 United States Presidential Election
Post by: Penguin022 on March 01, 2020, 06:37:38 PM
Gotcha. I don't know what will happen, but I do think there is a genuine fear among moderates of Bernie becoming the nomination, whether or not they support Biden/Buttigeg, and if Buttigeg supports Biden, this could be big bc it will be the first clear indication of the establishment slowly supporting Biden, and I think a lot of people who just don't want Bernie will support Biden, even if some of Buttigeg's supporters go to Bernie as well.

We'll see though.

He might do better than Hillary, but Biden has obvious health problems and has struggled in debates, and Trump's popularity has gone up and has become more powerful now that he's president. Biden doesn't excite anyone in the way that Trump excites his fans, and he has lost multiple times before.

True, she has no chance at this point
She has 1 delegate, but depending on the factors, her chances will grow through the years. My dad says Trump might beat Biden or Sanders; Sanders is fining his debaters and Biden depends, we’ll see how Trump is in months.

All we know is the winner for the Dems is either Biden or Sanders, and I see no sign of Sanders winning because of his fining and how he’s in the Independent Party

He cares so less about this virus that he's not getting tested for it despite very well coming into contact with the virus at the Conservative conference he attended. Frankly he's the only person on earth that I wouldn't mind having the virus, maybe then he'll actually care if it ravages his body.

That's debatable, Bernie has shown in multiple polls that he is the one who can beat Trump, while he also excites more people who wouldn't typically vote than Biden does. I also think he would debate better against Trump (he managed to convince Fox News watchers to vote for him the other day which is kinda unbelievable).

Well, the economy’s been doing great (Until the coronavirus happened, that is), and in fact, the Dow Jones Industrial Average reached an all-time high a few weeks ago. The African American unemployment rate is at an all-time low, and also a lot of high-paying jobs have been created, and you can tell just by going outside and walking around (Plenty of people have expensive new items such as expensive cell phones, expensive cars, designer clothes).

Yeah, that is true, and I can't argue that Trump has done good in that way, but he also withdrew from the Paris Agreement, and also imposed a travel ban on Middle Eastern countries. That meant 135 million people were prevented from coming to the USA. Can you argue that these were good things? Also my house is only worth 1,000,000 dollars, which isn't a lot, my mom's car is a 2006 Toyota, and I am holding an iPhone 7.

Alright. Although I don't think of any of those things as good as you do, I understand why that could matter to you. Now I'll tell you some of my issues with Trump as president and you can tell me what you like about it or why it doesn't bother you.

Firstly, I think Trump's stance on climate change is very concerning. Climate change has been proven to be an increasing epidemic in the world, and Trump immediately dropped out of the Paris Agreements for climate change when he became president, a cross-nation agreement to try to reduce the effect of climate change (which I already think is too minor of a reaction to climate change). Trump made the USA - one of the countries with the most dangerous carbon footprint in the world - drop out of the agreement, and he denies climate change's existence, despite obvious signs and the science proving him wrong.

What's your thoughts on Trump's climate change stance specifically.

(btw, I'm sorry, I didn't mean for so many responses to what you said lol, you don't have to reply to it all, but I certainly hope you can discuss with at least me).
