Yes, you are right. see the enemy counter below ? When it starts to shift to the next target, use the method i mentioned earlier.

Another tip,

When soldiers do the victory pose (after defeating an enemy), the cannonballs will target the next opponent before the soldiers charge to them.

Fire bomb are much more effective using this *cheap* method

EDIT: or normal cannonballs if ready.
