Many people think it's because the sun isn't out at night, but the answer isn't so simple infact the only reason it is light during the day is because of the atmosphere scattering light. If the Earth didn't have an atmosphere it would be dark even during the day. We know that the universe is infinite and there are an infinite amount of stars. If this were true than the night sky should be as bright as the daytime sky, so why isn't it? The answer is because light from the most distance stars has not had time to reach us yet.
