Until the 1920's, when Edwin Hubble calculated the distance to the Andromeda galaxy and found out that it was much farther away than the Milky Way stretched, people believed that the Milky Way was the only galaxy in the universe.

Once an asteroids is observed at it's closest point to Earth twice it's discoverer can give it any name they want to (with the only exception being that it can't be named after a living politician). There are even asteroids named Mccartney, Harrison, Starr, and Lennon each named after each member of the band "The Beatles".
