I hope that you don't mind your character being quite nervous at the start, it seems like you would be and slowly accept it while my character will slowly grow more nervous as the game approaches.

Chapter 3
Travels

I gape at the immaculate train station in Payska. Why does the capital of Suxnei have so many huge, advanced buildings? That's unfair; they're farmers, while us Gwarashnar live in the dry and cold badlands and are impoverished despite doing triple the work. We even have to travel to Payska in a carriage because there aren't any trains in the badlands.

A Survivalist guard pushes me towards the group. "Contestant Zetsu; keep moving".

At least it looks like someone from Gwarashnar might win this year. It's been a while. A decade ago, both winners of the Hunger Games were from Suxnei for four years in a row. Come on! This year, we have Sayla, the expert gatherer, and Kowhai, the daughter of our chief. She's very tech-savvy, since she's been to the Survivalist cities before.

I don't think that I will win, but I have more than two months to work out and learn some survival tips before the Hunger Games begin. If I won't be lazy, then I have a chance. I need to make some smart alliances. I don't necessarily have to make any friends; any emotional attachment to the contestants here could lead to my downfall.

I'm definitely going to learn from Sayla; from what I've heard, she lived in the wild badlands for a few years as a punishment for something, so she knows every type of edible or poisonous plant around and can build hidden shelter. She's a bit insane. Well, no, she is definitely insane. She wears a necklace of the ears of the deceased to silence screams that she claims she can hear. But she's hardy and ruthless, so it doesn't matter.

Sayla the gatherer; her ability to survive in the wilderness will help all of her allies.

Faiz and Ay-Chao are book smart, but I don't know anything else about them. If Faiz is really a poet then he doesn't stand a chance. Cosmo is great at sports, he's an athlete. He can be a good and trustworthy ally.

But I shouldn't limit myself to just Gwarashnar allies. That's what usually leads to our group's downfall. Maybe I can trick some of the Suxnei contestants.

Yes, that's a very good idea.

Joe keeps tossing and turning in his bed. This train cabin is uncomfortable, and everything on his mind isn't helping his calm down enough to sleep. He really, really, really doubts that he's getting past the first day.

Why is he in this anyways? These new rules were stupid. Joe won the 58th Hunger Games, and got an amputated leg and disfigured back for it. Unlike most Údnei victors, Joe opted to live in the Survivalist cities for much of his post-victor life, where he got a prosthetic leg, but nothing could be done for his back. He can already see it; limping away from the Cornucopia, only to have his lungs punctured by some rogue shooter.

At least he wasn't alone in this; rumour has it that another Hunger Games victor was selected as well. A guard said that it was Jayma from Charngashnar, who was the sole victor of the 33rd Hunger Games, but another one said that it was a winner of the 67th Hunger Games. Joe doesn't remember who won that year.

He's probably going to ally with any previous victors. The Údnei contestants are crazy this year. Joe never liked the Údnei marshlands. It was backwards in every way possible.

But did the holy High Priestess really have to be selected this year? The Sun Daughter, Batari, was already leading Sayori and Roshani in prayers that they win. Unlike most of the Údnei and Suxnei, Joe didn't believe in their deities of the sun and the moon. Unfortunately, because Batari was chosen, this Hunger Games is probably going to be filled with religious talk in her grand attempts to convert everyone.

Unlike most Údnei, Joe also could care less about who won. Meanwhile, Ianiant wouldn't stop talking about how exciting it was that Batari, Joe, and Roshani were chosen for the Údnei because of their prowess in combat. Roshani is the best athlete in the nation, including in wrestling, while Batari has a strong resistance to burns and is an expert with the bow. Joe wonders how Ianiant didn't notice his limp.

He is intrigued by that Sophia girl; something about her seems very off. Joe definitely wants to get to know her better.

Joe finds it very suspicious that he and Batari are in this year's Hunger Games. Both of them have been very outspoken about their distaste for Overseer Neff's new rules; it got Joe kicked out of the Survivalist cities, but he's returning one last time, it seems.

Actually, Joe feels that he has an idea why they were selected...and it isn't a great one.

Chapter 4
Preparations

"You have 3 minutes to find all of the edible food in this simulated arena. Go!".

Sophia had learned enough from the station leaders to figure out what types of mushrooms were safe to eat. Being from the hot and humid Údnei marshlands, she already knew what berries were edible and which were poisonous. But grasses and nuts were tougher.

She accidentally presents acorns as edible food, but otherwise, Sophia got everything else correct. And she only missed two foods!

She doesn't show it, but Sophia's proud at the fact that she is doing better than everyone at this station. Zetsu is decent, but Kowhai and Isabelle seem clueless. The others are scattered around the Survivalist valley, training in combat, hunting, or or other stuff. There was plenty of time to wait and relax.

The contestants from Suxnei seemed very nice, unlike how most people portrayed them. A contestant called Robin had caught Sophia's eye; she seemed kind, and not at all intent on killing, but intelligent. But she was always with two other boys and an older man. Probably the three male Suxnei contestants; those people stuck together like glue every Game. But they aren't all bad...

"Honestly", Sophia thought to herself, "the four groups of natives are stereotyped to the Moon and back". The Charngashnar were raw meat eaters; Gwarashnar gatherers never bathed; the Suxnei were rich and fat; and the Údnei were religious fundamentalists.

Going off on her own to the Údnei longhouse, Sophia basks in the warm sunshine as blue jays yell in the background. It's just like the victors told her; the valley that you trained in was really nice. Lots of birdsong, rivers, flowers, and nature. Definitely a good location for a prison.

The serenity in this valley is relaxing.

The contestants had exactly 60 days left until the Hunger Games started. That gave Sophia plenty of time to get to know her fellow contestants. She wasn't looking forward to the interviews or the runway show. What was the point of being pretty when you were being sentenced to an almost certain death?

Ever since the reforms that started from the 50th Hunger Games, there were always 60 to 65 days of preparation instead of 7. It helped most of the contestants get used to the fact that they were probably going to die. After you think about it every day for such a long time, it's just a grim reality. Sophia was already accepting it; but there was no chance that she'd give up.

No, she will win this, she tells herself. Approaching the longhouse, already Sophia can hear an argument. Not unusual; High Priestess Batari and Joe won't stop arguing about religion. Sophia wasn't the most religious person, so she never took sides.

"Blasphemer! If it is sunny with no clouds in the sky for three days straight, then it means that the Sun is happy with us. Join our prayers now or risk death!".

Sophia gapes at High Priestess Batari yelling at Joe.

"In the Hunger Games, I mean. I won't murder anyone in here, obviously", she says, smiling sheepishly.

High Priestess Batari is an ambitious pyromaniac.

Sophia takes some food and walks back out to eat lunch alone. Her fellow contestants were polar opposites and unbearable. What happens when you combine the High Priestess, an atheist, a tribalistic teenager, a selfish athlete, an innocent animal lover, and Sophia? Not good.

There won't be anything for the next month, just more training and contestant get-togethers. Then all of the publicity starts, and Sophia will have to be prodded like a horse around the Survivalist cities.

This seems fun!
