can we just stop and agree that COVID-19 is worse than the normal flu

Yes!!!

We've never had to close everything down due to a flu.

I agree, I just can't comprehend how people are still trying to downplay this by saying it's an overreaction how governments are reacting...

Yeah, the only strain of influenza that's ever done that is H1N1. Swine flu in 2009 caused a few closures, but nothing this severe. And of course, the infamous Spanish flu was also a strain of H1N1 (but even deadlier than the one in 2009). Hopefully if it resurges we'll be more prepared!

We know so much about influenza, any flu ought to not be too big of an issue.

Hopefully COVID-19 means we can be more prepared for future coronaviruses as well. SARS and MERS were already bad, but because they ended up being much smaller, nobody ever cared enough into trying to find a vaccine or treatment.

Coronaviruses are notoriously difficult to find treatment for as antibodies do not work, but they are also very unlikely to mutate due to how the RNA works, which means that if the entire world focuses on it we should be able to find treatment eventually.

obviously not the black plague is a thing that happened

Don't know what that even is, honestly.

The world doesn't revolve around the USA. 9/11 means nothing to most people except Americans.

As an American, people talk way too much about 9/11. It means nothing to me. People have to move on from the past.

can we just stop and agree that COVID-19 is worse than the normal flu

Not for the sake of agreeing.

Are you guys forgetting the Spanish Flu?

That happened hundreds of years ago. None of us were even born.

Nobody here was born at that time period.

Also, this virus will go away quickly. No need to worry, as none of you will get it. Even if someone gets it, recovery takes usually less than a week. The symptoms include coughing, fever, and shortness of breath. We all had these at one point, right?

You are somewhat correct, but there is a chance that someone could get it either way. You are right though that for us, recovery will be easy as the virus doesn’t hurt young people much!

"Much" is the key word sadly; a lot of young people are using this as an excuse to believe that they're immune, and then get shocked when they hear of the few rare cases that can and do happen of perfectly healthy people aged 18 or 24 dying from complications with this virus. So always be careful!
